In this lesson the class learns about Apicoop, bees and honey using connectives.
Curriculum Links: KS2 English
Learning Objective: To investigate the simple connectives: “so that, therefore, if….then”
Learning Outcome: Children have used connectives in sentences to describe Chino’s story.
Starter: Divide pupils into pairs to think of some examples of how they would use these connectives in a sentence. (N.B. The worksheet has been left in an editable format so that you can use different connectives here for differing ability groups).
Using their examples elicit the purpose of the connectives. Why do we use them? (e.g. to provide further information or explain something in more detail.)
Main Activity: Read through the Apicoop Producer Profile and Chino’s story. What opportunities has Fairtrade provided for Chino, and Apicoop?
Ask the students to use the connectives to join different bullet points and generate longer sentences which make fluent sense.
Read Chino’s producer story to older pupils and ask them to write their own sentences about Apicoop using these connectives.
Plenary: One student sits with their back to the board. Write a person/phrase/ organisation related to Fairtrade and Apicoop on the board. The rest of the class has to try to help the student to guess the answer correctly without saying the word itself. This can also be carried out as a team game.
